Common Crane
Common Crane

When this very small stamp was issued, I must have dismissed it as showing tiny images of White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) which had appeared on an earlier Russian stamp, so I did not collect it. Just recently, I had a closer look at it and realised that the rear end of the birds did not look right. These birds have what can be described as a "bustle" of untidy feathers around the tail, just like the Common Crane (Grus grus).

Update 5 June, 2011: Sorin Cosoveanu of Rumania has suggested that the cranes look like Siberian Cranes (Grus leucogeranus), and did some further research. He checked the site of the philatelic service of the Russian Post which states "The stamp features white cranes, the most rare cranes in the world." I shall amend this stamp in my next update.
