Georgia 1996 Birds of Prey

This sheet of 16 stamps was issued at the same time as a sheet of song birds, which were all fairly easy to identify. On both sheets, the bird's name is given only in Georgian, which did not help with correctly identifying the species shown. Recently, I discovered that Avibase lists the birds of Georgia with the option of seeing the names in Georgian. For each stamp, I have extracted the name from the stamp, and compared with the name on Avibase. The comparison table below shows that I have a few corrections to make, and that CBoS lists some incorrectly. I could not find the Georgian name for Red Kite, but this Google image search with the name on the stamp finds Red Kites. I shall make my corrections in my next update.

SG164: We all agree this is White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) SG165: We all agree this is Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) SG166: CBoS lists this as Short-toed Eagle (Circaetus gallicus) which is correct! SG167: The Georgian name is “Buzzard”, so I'm staying with Eurasian Buzzard (Buteo buteo) SG168: We all agree this is Red Kite (Milvus milvus). SG169: CBos lists this as Western Marsh-Harrier (Circus aeruginosus) which is correct! SG170: We all agree this is Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) SG171: We all agree this is Tawny Owl (Strix aluco) SG172: CBoS lists this as Eurasian Hobby (Falco subbuteo) which is correct though the rufous belly is not there. SG173: We all agree this is Eurasian Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) SG174: We all agree this is Northern Long-eared Owl (Asio otus) SG175: We all agree this is Great Grey Owl (Strix nebulosa) but it is not on the Georgia list. SG176: I list this as Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) which is correct SG177: The Georgian name is “Spotted Eagle” so I'm sticking with Greater Spotted Eagle (Aquila clanga). Later WWF issues also have the same name. SG178: I list this as Boreal Owl (Aegolius funereus) which is correct SG179: We all agree this is Eurasian Eagle-Owl (Bubo bubo) though the name on the stamp is almost impossible to decipher because of the dark background.
